Interim Management – Emergency Department and Perioperative Services Performance Improvement

FTI Consulting provided interim Emergency Department leadership support to its client with focus on governance, change management and performance improvement resulting in improvement in key metrics, stakeholder engagement and patient satisfaction and throughput.
In a concurrent Perioperative assessment, FTI Consulting assessed operational challenges and opportunities, resulting in enhanced alignment of processes and leadership and dashboard development and standardization.
Situation
FTI Consulting was engaged by the client to provide interim leadership support in the adult emergency department.
Due to recent key leadership changes in the chair and nurse leader, FTI Consulting’s interim leader was asked to provide support in the development of a governance structure, to support the required changes and help drive performance improvement efforts.
Concurrently, FTI Consulting was engaged to perform an assessment of Perioperative operations with the intent to review the functional requirements and interdependencies across the delivery of care required for achieving surgical growth.
As a result of the assessment, it was determined that a focused implementation involving support services, specifically sterile processing, would best align with the organization’s strategic objectives. The engagement addressed a large OR suite (over 150 cases per day) and SPD department that had both on-site and off-site processing facilities.
Our Role
Emergency Department Interim Management
FTI Consulting deployed interim leadership in the emergency department to assist new chair and clinical nurse leader in accelerating change and engagement.
- Developed and executed new governance structure aligned with strategic pillar goals.
- Supported assigned dyad pillar leaders in development of scorecards, metrics and focused on accelerated improvement.
- Initiated monthly financial reviews to identify revenue enhancement and expense management opportunities.
- Provided continuous leadership and operation support.
- Improved coordination and collaboration between radiology and lab services to improve turnaround times and process improvement.
Perioperative Services
- FTI Consulting examined the opportunities and challenges to support surgical growth focused on sterile processing.
- Evaluated current process gaps.
- Collaboratively designed an improved workflow and throughput.
- Developed strategies and processes to support the defined objective.
- Performed a comprehensive review of data systems and metrics to improve capture, reporting, and data-driven decision making.
- Supported development of comprehensive vendor implant management to support storage, coordination, management and communication.
