William Nolan is the co-leader of the Financial Services practice where he focuses on working with senior management, lenders and other stakeholders in business turnarounds and restructurings. Mr. Nolan has more than 30 years of financial consulting and management experience and is the one of the firm’s leading experts on the restructuring of financial services companies.
Mr. Nolan has extensive experience assisting senior management teams and various stakeholders in developing and implementing restructuring/turnaround plans, stabilizing operations, developing liquidity forecasts, identifying and addressing underperforming operations, sourcing new debt, managing dispositions of non-core operations, preparing for Chapter 11 filings and guiding companies through the bankruptcy process. Mr. Nolan also has extensive experience in interim management roles, acting as Chief Restructuring Officer, Chief Liquidation Officer and serving as a member of Boards of Directors.
Most recently, Mr. Nolan was engaged as lead financial advisors by seven different large mREITs that were reeling due to the pandemic induced shut down. These companies represented almost $100 billion in mortgage and mortgage related investments. Mr. Nolan and his team guided their clients through the crisis and successfully reached standstills and longer-term amendments, avoiding potential shut down and liquidations.
Mr. Nolan also acted as the lead financial advisor in the financial and operational restructuring of Residential Capital (“ResCap”), at the time, one of the nation’s largest residential mortgage originator and servicer. In addition, Mr. Nolan acted as the restructuring advisor to the Chapter 11 Trustee of MF Global. At the time, MF Global was a large international broker dealer specializing in financial derivatives and commodities.
Mr. Nolan also has extensive experience working with residential mortgage companies including Credit-Based Asset Servicing and Securitization (“C-BASS”); Impac Mortgage; Walter Investment Management; Sterns Lending; Ditech; Ocwen Financial; Gateway Mortgage; People’s Choice Mortgage; Mortgage Lenders Network; ResMae Mortgage Corporation; First NLC; Alliance Mortgage; Mortgage Corporation of America; American Business Financial Services; Franklin Credit, United Mortgage and Loan; Conti-Financial Corporation; United Companies; First Alliance Mortgage Company; Fidelity Bond and Mortgage, and others. Mr. Nolan has also worked with many consumer lenders including Advanta Corp; The Educational Resource Institute; Think Finance; Summit Financial; Thaxton Group; Capitol Bank; Heilig-Meyers; and Spruce Finance.
Oftentimes, Mr. Nolan’s financial services practice intersects with the financing of real estate assets. So, in addition to working with many residential mortgage companies, Mr. Nolan has also been involved in the restructuring of some of the nation’s largest real estate and real estate finance companies, a sample of which includes; Pennsylvania Real Estate Trust; Eagle Hospitality; Oakwood Homes; LNR Partners; Criimi Mae; Orleans Homebuilders; Extended Stay America; Rohrig Investments, LP; Innkeepers USA; South Edge Inspirada; Transwest Resort Properties; Westgate Resorts; Dancing Bear Aspen; Erickson Retirement Communities; Ultimate Escapes; and VREP LLC., to name a few.
Prior to its acquisition by FTI Consulting, Mr. Nolan served as a Partner in the U.S. division of PwC’s Business Recovery Services group. During his time with PwC, Mr. Nolan spent several years as a Senior Manager in PwC’s UK Insolvency practice.
